This week is the premiere of Nearly Ninety at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the celebration of the 90th birthday of Merce Cunningham. On Sunday, April 19th, Foofwa will join other alumni dancers from the company to thank Merce and wish him happy birthday.
“Nearly Ninety is choreographically marvelous. I watched in awe, and witnessed incredibly clear and physical dancers perform another masterpiece. Within Merce’s aesthetics, it is innovative by the second, full of situations, partnering, and dance phrases previously unseen to me in Merce's work. I was crying, laughing and wow-ing almost throughout the 85 minute long dance. It is astounding that Merce is able to put together such an incredibly new experience at the end of his ninth decade, and he inspired me to do everything I can to stay active and creative into old age!”
